The Particulate Matter Monitoring Network in Miskolc Celebrates Its Third Anniversary
The PM monitoring in Miskolc is celebrating its third anniversary, providing locals with real-time air quality information since September 2, 2021.
As a result of two years of research and development by the University of Miskolc and the Municipality of Miskolc, the city's particulate matter (PM) monitoring network and its associated website, pmmonitoring.hu, were launched in 2021 as part of the HungAIRy LIFE integrated project.
Air pollution data measured by the 60 measuring units in Miskolc are available on the website and, from January 2024, on the PM monitoring app for Android and iOS.
Both platforms are growing in popularity: the pmmonitoring.hu website has been visited by 11,000 visitors since September 2021, while the PM monitoring app has been downloaded by more than 100 users in 8 months.
Data from the past three years show that air quality in Miskolc is steadily improving. The sensors in the measuring units detect significant pollution levels during the heating season and in unfavorable weather conditions, while for most of the year, the air quality in the city is good or excellent.
Currently, the planned relocation of 10 measuring units to neighboring settlements is underway. The purpose of the relocation is to receive data on the air quality in areas around Miskolc and to assess how industrial and residential emissions near the city affect the particulate matter concentrations measured in Miskolc.
